Vasile Goldiş, luptător pentru drepturile şi dreptatea poporului român din Transilvania

  • Subiect: The study presents synthetically the life and activity of Vasile Goldiş (1862-1934), the fighter who militated for the national rights of the Romanians from Austria-Hungary. Professor and well-known publicist, endowed with a considerable culture and professing democratic ideas, Vasile Goldiş was a front ranker in the struggle for the national emancipation and the political unity of the Romanians. The newspaper Românul, under his leadership, played an important part in gathering the forces around it and guiding the political and cultural actions. The data on Vasile Goldiş's activity in the summer and autumn of 1918 have been enriched on the basis of some unpublished documents and also on the press of that time, little investigated up to the present. This activity places him among the preeminent political personalities of the Romanians in Transylvania, justifying his role of leader of the Romanian people at the Great National Assembly at Alba Iulia in December 1, 1918. Goldiş's speech and the declaration for the unconditioned union of Transylvania with Romania had many advanced bourgeois democratic principles, necessary for the consolidation of the enlarged new state. Vasile Goldiş remained the same democratic, modest man throughout his life and that is why he did not play important political parts like other people of his generation.
