Un nou lot de denari romani imperiali descoperit la Munteneşti (jud. Vaslui)

  • Subiect: Eighteen years after entering the numismatics literature through the paper of Prof. D. Tudor (note 1) of the Imperial Roman Denarii Hoard from Munteneşti, a new and important stock of coins belonging to the same hoard was presented to be purchased by the History Museum of Moldavia. The author tries to demonstrate that these 311 coins from Munteneşti II must be put side by side to the hoard of Munteneşti 1. She presents the following arguments: a) That who brought the coins is the son of the old discoverer and said that he inherited them. b) As he had declared the new coins would be found together in the same place. c) The fragment of the vase presented by Prof. Tudor (see op. cit., p. 381) is large enough to include all the 775 coins. d) The percentage of coins for each emperor, their state of preservation and their weight are similar. In the establishment of the amassing of the recovered part they have in view them origin of these denarii. The author agrees with the opinion that a great part of the hoard of denarii from Moldavia would come from the stipendia given to the Carpo-Dacian tribes. A text from Jordanes (Get., XIII, 76) commented by Radu Vulpe and one of Tacitus (Historiae, III.46, 2), are mentioned to explain in this way the first part of the hoard. To the epoch between Trajanus and Marcus Aurelius corresponds 77, 17 % from the newly discovered coins. The sudden diminution of the number of coins after Commodus’ reign is a sign of disturbing of the peaceful relations that have reigned more than six decades. The burial of the hoard is due to the Gothic invasion and to the changes in the Carpo-Dacian society, to the changed attitude towards the Empire (see note 14). The hoard of Munteneşti stands side by side with other important discoveries of coins that contribute to completing the people's political and economic history in Moldavia from the 2nd and the 3rd centuries A.D.
