Legători de cărţi din judeţul Buzău (a doua jumătate a sec. al XVIII-lea - sec. al XIX-lea)

  • Subiect: Bookbinders of the Buzău county (second half of the 18th century - 19th century) A great part of the old cult books from the collections of Buzău County still preserves the original bindings made in the l8th -l9th centuries. At the time, the printing house made only a loose cover for the books, and the buyer had to protect the book with wood or leather covers. In other situations, the damaged books needed to be repaired or bound once again. Thus, the binders were very important people in the community, therefore we have to study their activity and have a good knowledge of the impact book-society in the Carpathians Curve area. Until the l9th century, only the church people practiced book-binding: monks, priests, psalm readers, and the binding type used was called ''ci oi strai". In the 19th century appeared the specialized craftsmen who signed as "book-binders". The giving, as well as the binding of a book for the village church, represented memorable gestures that needed to be noticed and written. Sometimes, the binders themselves wrote on the book pages the date, the price and the name of those who paid for the binding. Starting from these notes, we identified 15 binders, born in the Buzău County villages or just passing. One of those, with constant activity, was Father Nan of Pleşcoi village (attested in 1795-1822) and his son, Gheorghe chancellor (mentioned in 1816-1855).
