Episcopul Chesarie Căpăţână (1825-1846)

  • Subiect: Bishop Chesarie Căpăţâna Chesarie Căpăţână, the great Romanian hierarch of the I 9th century, belongs to the generation of our cultural renaissance. His pastorate shows him as an important personality, full of devotion whose actions are still known in the Buzău diocese. Living in an era of national revival, Bishop Chesarie actively encouraged the development of religious and secular education, because he considered the spread of science as a first step to the modernization of the Romanian society. Bishop Chesarie accorded particular attention to organizing the monastic activity, with a special care for the church and clergy of the Buzău diocese. All along his episcopacy, Chesarie was of an irreproachable virtue, loving the monastic life; he told those who came to him, not to live well, but to die well. Through all the things he built and printed, through all the help he granted to everybody, his name, Chesarie of Buzău, remains engraved in gold letters in the history of the Buzău diocese as well as the Romanian Church.
