Nicolae Milescu Spătarul - marele cărturar umanist şi „Marco Polo de Romania”

  • Subiect: Figure prominently in Romanian and Russian culture in the second half of the eighteenth century and the beginning of Nicolae Milescu Backrest (1636-1708) was one of the most valuable representatives of humanist culture. Nicolae Milescu was a great scholar, historian, geographer, philologist, theologian, translator, traveler, diplomat and even world-renowned ethnographer. He had a spectacular political and diplomatic career. He was one of the great minds of his time, that he felt at home in the great capitals of the world: Paris, Berlin, Viena, Stockholm, Constantinopol, Beijing, Moscova etc. Being good knowledge of foreign languages, politics, diplomacy, history, philosophy and theology, and in 1671 was appointed Professor staff of the future Tsar Peter the Great of Russia. During his reign, Nicholas Milescu became imperial tax collector and chief diplomatic corps of the translators Council of Mosova. Between 1675-1678, as high ambassador, Nicolae Milescu was sent by Tsar of Russia at the head of the Russian message that the king went to China's diplomatic mission that contributed to the knowledge of China. Through scholarly activity, Nicolae Milescu had a great contribution to the development of social and political thought, philosophical, religious, geographic and ethnographic spaces in which he lived. He wrote the theological work "Eastern Star shining in the West" and translated "Old Testament" - which was the basis of printing "Bible of Bucharest" by Serban Cantacuzino 1688. He translated works from Greek and Latin in ancient and medieval European culture: religious works, historical and philosophical, all being popularized in several languages. The most important of his works remain "Logbook in China" and "Description of China".
