  • Subiect: Summary: The paper deals with a subject neglected by the Romanian historiography, a chapter that has been much too easily overlooked. It is about a time and space segment from the Second World War, respectively the Eastern Europe German-Soviet Front. During the offensive from 1943 – beginning of 1944, the USSR army entered on the Romanian territory. The Soviet advance was stopped on an alignment located in the Northern part of Romania, starting from the West side of the town of Cernauţi, running from the West of Radauţi and Suceava, affecting the towns of Fălticeni, Paşcani and Iaşi and going further towards the river Nistru, North of Chişinau and extending on the left bank of the Nistru up to the its flow into the Black Sea. That front segment (of about 300 km) located on the territory of Romania belonged to the great Eastern Front that ran from the Baltic Sea to the North to the Black Sea to the South. The paper emphasizes the resistance of the Romanian army for five months against the Soviet invasion. It insists on the fierce battles that took place during five months on the above-mentioned alignment and entered into the annals of history under the short name of Iaşi-Chişinau Front. The paper also comprises data regarding the massive concentration of military forces, on both sides, which emphasizes the special strategic importance of Iaşi-Chişinau Front from 1944. It also includes dramatic moments regarding the disaster that affected the settlements from that part of Romania as a result of the heavy military confrontations that took place since March till August 1944. The end of that Romanian persistent resistance was not a happy one because the Russian army, morally supported by the USSR-USA-England alliance succeeded to defeat the Romanian resistance in the area of Iaşi through a very strong offensive, doubled by the preparations from Bucharest related to the overthrow from August 23, 1944.
