  • Subiect: A short view on some important cyrillic marginal annotations from some old books owned by the National History Museum of Romania The National History Museum of Romania holds in its vast profile collection a large number of medieval manuscripts and printed books which represent a true attraction to informed visitors. The manuscripts and printed old books selected for this study are masterpieces of the genre, with fascinating background stories. Some of them have been exhibited within the successful project suggestively called „the monthly exhibit at the National History Museum of Romania”. The unicity of these heritage goods is given not only by their artistic, calligraphic and typographic execution and by their illuminations, but also by the extremely important marginal annotations, pages of local and, why not, even national history. The old Romanian language, written with Cyrillic characters, was generalized and became largely used in books starting with the 17th century, also known as the „age of the Romanian language”, because during the reigns of princes Matei Basarab and Vasile Lupu the first Romanian language printings were initiated. Thus, learned individuals (priests, monks, teachers, copyists) used the old Romanian language to evoke various facts or to mention the name of a book’s owner, sometimes appealing to curses in order to prevent the dishonest appropriation of the object.
